Life Skills and Cultural Connections in Vancouver, British Columbia

Life Skills & cultural Connections, Vancouver, BC

At Sage Nation Society, we believe that preparing youth for adulthood means more than just teaching practical tasks—it’s about nurturing identity, building confidence, and creating space for cultural reconnection. Our Life Skills & Cultural Connections program supports BIPOC (Black, Indigenous or People of Colour) youth aged 16 to 29 with the tools, knowledge, and cultural grounding they need to thrive in the world, while honouring who they are and where they come from. This program is open to youth of all identities and experiences, and is rooted in the understanding that healing and growth are strongest when culture and community are at the center.

Through one-on-one mentorship and small group sessions, we offer hands-on learning opportunities in essential life areas like cooking, grocery shopping, budgeting, communication, and navigating systems such as healthcare, education, and income support. Our approach is relational, flexible, and youth-led—ensuring that every session is meaningful and tailored to individual needs and goals. Whether a young person is learning how to meal prep, understand a lease agreement, or advocate for themselves in a new setting, we provide consistent support and guidance every step of the way.

Equally important, this program creates opportunities for youth to reconnect with their cultural identity and experience land-based healing practices. This includes activities such as smudging, storytelling, seasonal teachings, and ceremony, as well as optional home blessings to bring spiritual grounding and intention into new living spaces. We work with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and cultural mentors to ensure that youth have access to safe, respectful, and affirming spaces to explore who they are and where they belong.

Life skills and cultural connection go hand in hand. When young people feel confident in their ability to care for themselves and connected to their culture and community, they are better equipped to face challenges, celebrate milestones, and shape their own paths. This program is here to uplift that journey—through support, tradition, and belonging.
